Prevents Skin From Dehydration

Not only the body, it turns out that the skin can also be dehydrated. The good news is that there are ways to keep skin moisturized from within.

Dehydration of the skin or dry skin is a condition when the skin lacks fluid in the epidermal layer, causing the loss of the Natural Moisturizing Factor or the skin’s natural moisturizing factor which results in decreased moisture levels.

Be alert if you experience symptoms of skin dehydration as below.

  1. The skin feels tight and itchy, especially after washing, bathing, or swimming.
  2. Skin looks dull and feels rough.
  3. There are fine lines or peeling on the skin of certain body parts.

Behind Dehydrated Skin

The outermost layer of the skin is called the epidermis. In this layer, there are 4 types of layers of skin cells, one of which is the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum (SC) is a lipid-protein membrane that is most important when the skin is dehydrated. This fluid in the epidermis layer plays a role in maintaining elasticity and preventing the skin from becoming dry.

In this stratum corneum, there are important components, such as natural moisturizing factor (NMF) which is in charge of maintaining skin moisturizing fluid levels. NMF is a combination of hygroscopic molecules (attractive and retains water) that helps maintain hydration of the stratum corneum. Some of the content of NMF is salt (including electrolytes), urea, and lactate. Amino acids are also stored in it.

The production of NMF is highly dependent on the humidity of the surrounding environment. When the fluid content is less than 10 percent, the skin surface will become dry. Dry skin may be a sign that the body is dehydrated.

You can prevent skin dehydration by drinking electrolytes regularly at any time, including before going to bed to keep the skin hydrated from within. This is because electrolyte fluids are able to replace the body’s components of sodium, potassium, and magnesium that are lost through sweat.

Anyone can have beautiful skin. But keeping it from dehydration is also very important. Drinking lots of electrolytes will help maintain your skin’s natural moisture. At the same time, it keeps the skin healthy even though you are busy with activities.
